macadam 柏油碎石路面

來自19世紀(jì)蘇格蘭土建工程師John McAdam,字面意思即son of Adam.其于1822年設(shè)計了一種用顆粒大小一致的碎石子鋪路的在當(dāng)時領(lǐng)先的筑路技術(shù)。后這一技術(shù)被進(jìn)一步改良，使用柏油和碎石攪拌以使路面更堅固耐用。

macadam (n.): 1824, named for inventor, Scottish civil engineer John L. McAdam (1756-1836), who developed a method of leveling roads and paving them with gravel and outlined the process in his pamphlet "Remarks on the Present System of Road-Making" (1822). Originally the word meant road material consisting of a solid mass of stones of nearly uniform size laid down in layers (McAdam did not approve of the use of binding materials or rollers). The idea of mixing tar with the gravel began 1880s.
